    Jeremy and Brooke Osiborski of Owenton announce the birth of their son, Jett Cooper Osiborski.
    Jett was born at 6:49 p.m. Nov. 22 at Frankfort Regional Medical Center. He weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces and was 20.5-inches long.
    Jett was welcomed into this world by maternal grandparents Charles and Cindy McDonald, fraternal grandparents Tim and Lisa Kelly, and many other family members and friends.

  • Sweet sharing


    The John Guill Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution met at the home of Peggy Trinkle Dec. 11 where they enjoyed a Christmas cookie exchange.
    Each member brought cookies to exchange with the other members. Members also brought designated items for a baby gift pack for NSDAR’s project for pregnant veterans to show our appreciation of their service to our country.

  • Teen taking to the pulpit

    Jake Rider, a student at Owen County High School, will be one of 130 featured young people preaching at the second annual Festival of Young Preachers in Louisville Jan. 6-8.
    The National Festival of Young Preachers is hosted by the Academy of Preachers, an initiative underwritten by the Lilly Endowment. It offers young preachers from all denominations an opportunity to preach before an audience of family, friends and other guests.

  • The social season comes to an end until spring

    This has been a busy week for me. I’m sure it has for most of my readers too, with Christmas just a week away.
     I got the last of the decorating done on Monday. Anything that is not covered with  red, green and gold by now will just have to wait till next year. Tuesday was banking day, a trip to the library and bridge. Mary Ann Cobb had it this time and it was our Christmas party.
    The sun was shining and we had a very nice afternoon, but this will be our last afternoon till March.

  • Think safety as winter approaches

    Everyone is potentially at risk during winter storms. Most fatalities are indirectly related to the storm. People die from traffic accidents on icy roads, heart attacks while shoveling snow, and hypothermia from prolonged exposure to cold and unsafe residential conditions.
    According to Owen County EM Director Rick Morgan, you should be prepared for winter weather by listening to NOAA weather radio or commercial radio/television to stay informed about winter storm watches, warnings and advisories.

  • Kays Branch News: Another week, another outage on the Branch

    Winter has come early this year. We had 4 inches of snow on the Branch this weekend. The DirecTV dish was covered with snow and I had no service on the TV sets except the antenna for most of the day Saturday. The Internet service went out, too, so I had to communicate the old-fashioned way, via phone for about 24 hours.

    I was decorating the house all week for Christmas and trying to finish Saturday, so I really didn’t miss it much.

  • Monterey News: A tough but wonderful Thanksgiving

    I realize I’m a little late with this news but wanted to share some things with you all.

    Thanksgiving has come and gone. I’m very thankful for a lot of things – my health and family first off – but also for all the wonderful things God has provided for me and my family through the years.

    However, this year was a little tough on us all with it being our first Thanksgiving without Mom.  We sure did miss her. I now know what she went through each and every holiday without her parents.

  • Cheering in Philly

    As they marched their way down JFK Boulevard and 20th Street at the United States’ oldest Thanksgiving Day parade, two Owen County cheerleaders were surrounded by hundreds of adoring young girls.

    Veronica Chisholm and Hannah Runion traveled to Philadelphia, Nov. 23 to perform with 250 other cheerleaders in the 92nd Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade.

    The two tried out for the event this past summer at UCA Cheerleading camp.

    Chisholm said the two tried out as part of a squad and each were judged on one routine, one cheer and one jump.

  • Young tech-savvy students will show skills at state

    After recently traveling to Northern Kentucky University for a regional Student Technology Leadership Program competition, Owen County School’s students once again proved that hard work pays off.

    Nine out of 10 STLP projects  —including an Owen County Primary School project — will advance to state competition in May in hopes of continuing on to the International Society for Technology in Education conference next summer in Philadelphia.

    STLP is a project-based learning program that teaches students how to use technology to learn and achieve.
