    WEEKEND GARDENER

I can hardly believe how beautiful my tomato plants look and I do believe I will have a ripe one well before July 4th! But what I am really anticipating is our first harvest of summer squash. I love squash and am happy to eat it for dinner every night. Last year the garden was mostly a bust so I have high hopes for a bumper squash crop this year.

OWEN EXTENSION AGENT FOR AGRICULTURE AND NATURAL RESOURCES

The intestinal tracts of all mammals have various types of bacteria as part of their natural intestinal microflora. There are many opportunities for young children to be exposed to these bacteria, such as pets, friends, etc. Our state’s most recent salmonella outbreak is a harsh reminder of this as many of the victims are children.

  • Donald Ray and Betty Jane (Perkins) Bishop were married June 23, 1956 by Bro. Orlie Hale at Beechwood, Ky.

All their family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of their “60 Years of Marriage” to be held in the fellowship hall of the Long Ridge Baptist Church on Sunday, June 26, 2016. The reception for Don and Betty will be from 2-5 p.m.

  • In the 1800s famine hit Ireland and more than 2 million Irish immigrated to America. The Brown family was part of this seemingly unending wave of starving yet determined people who looked to a new life and a new land of opportunity.

The Browns settled in Virginia, and not long after the births of their children, both died, leaving behind four young orphans.

  • God smiled on the farmers this week. Teri and I went to Carrollton on Saturday to a birthday reunion. From the time I left the house and all the way to Owenton, there were large rolls of hay in every field I passed. I had to take the detour around Owenton and I saw country I didn’t know existed and there were more rolls of hay.

  • Renee Black and Derrick Dempsey will be married at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, June 18 at Long Ridge Baptist Church. A reception for the couple will be after the wedding at the Owen County Extension Office.

    N-H COLUMNIST

Perhaps you’ve heard the tale about the little boy who, after church one Sunday, announced to his mother that he has decided to be a pastor when he grows up.

“That’s OK with us,” his mother said, “but how did you make this decision?”

“Well,” the boy replied, “I’ll have to go to church on Sunday anyway, and I figure it will be more fun to stand up and yell than to sit still and listen.”
