  • Lost man looks to cat to find his way back home

    BY ROGER ALFORD

My friend Ricky Jacobs told me a funny tale about the fellow who absolutely despised his wife’s cat and decided to get rid of it by driving down the road a couple miles and dropping it off.

As that man pulled back into his driveway, he saw the cat sitting on the porch waiting for him.

The next day, he drove the cat farther away, put it out, and headed home. Again, to his surprise, the cat was sitting on the porch waiting for him.

  • Maybe our pride is what keeps people from visiting our churches

Years ago, I attended a seminar at my church where the speaker, a pastor from a church in San Francisco, quite possibly the coolest city on earth, talked about the “counterintuitive way of doing church.”

He challenged us to make church a place where those outside the faith could feel welcome as they worked out their process.

Church, he said, should be a place that encourages questions, gives space for doubt and doesn’t demand that people make on-the-spot faith decisions. Church should be a safe place where people can try faith on, test it out.

  • How do you relate to a raccoon? Small, chubby, eats junk

I got such a kick out of a post my niece Becky Ayres shared on Facebook one day last week listing the reasons she can relate to a raccoon. This is her list:

  • What I really want is more of Jesus and less of other, worldly things

Once upon a time I had $3 pants.

Dark, forest green rayon pinstriped dress slacks, with teeny flecks of black in the fabric. Regularly $45 marked down to $14.29 with an additional 30 percent off, then another 70 percent off – $3 pants!

I was so excited about my purchase that when I got them home I immediately put them in a place of honor in my closet and sat on my bed to admire my precious find.

  • Onions aren't the only food that can make you cry

A newspaper photographer was told that a twin-engine plane would be waiting for him at a rural airport.

He got there, spotted a plane warming up on the runway, and jumped in, telling the man at the controls: “Let’s go.”

The plane taxied down the runway, bounced a couple times, and took off.

Once in the air, the photographer delivered the order: “Fly low over the next ridge to so I can snap some pictures.”

  • Who could possibly be worthy enough to receive the sacrament?

A few weeks ago, I wrote about a local pastor, Larry Silverman, of New Covenant Grace Fellowship.

Shortly after that I was dusting my bookcase and found a book Larry wrote, “The River is Here.”

The river in the title is taken from something Jesus said: “Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart’” (John 7:38, New Living Translation).

  • Will you leave through the attic or the basement?

    BY ROGER ALFORD
    N-H Columnist

A stingy old fellow who had been diagnosed with a terminal illness was determined to take his money with him to heaven.

He instructed his wife to take his money out of the bank and fill up two pillow cases and to put those pillow cases in the attic, directly above his bed.

That way, when he died, he reasoned he could grab the money on his way up to heaven.

After the funeral, the man’s wife went into the attic, and there were the pillow cases, still stuffed with cash.
