Kays Branch News

  • Class of ‘48 searching for classmates

Welcome to Spring. I know it’s spring because The Talking Head on TV said so this morning. I went down and built up the fire in the wood stove in the basement anyway. I’ll let it go out by noon, but when the basement is warm, it makes the rest of the house easier to heat. Hopefully, this well is the last fire of the season.

  • Branch may have a new industry

I’ll start this morning with the news that didn’t make it last week. Wanda was staying with her mother and forgot her iPhone, so she had to call and dictate her information over the phone. I had already sent my news to Molly when she called again and added information. I must say that without Wanda covering the area, there wouldn’t be a Kay’s Branch News.
My family and I are mostly “stay at homes” these days. We go to Frankfort to shop, and I play cards a couple of times a month, but that is it.

  • UK basketball is life...for now

First, I wish to apologize for the terrible grammar in one of my sentences last week. The computer has “spell check, ” but it knows nothing about grammar. I have got to start reading what I write before I send it to Molly. Miss Martha Holbrook and Miss Lena Watson are turning in their graves. The few who went to grade school and high school will know what I mean. Anyone who went through grade school and high school and had them for teachers had proper grammar pounded into their souls.

  • Nature may think it’s April, we know better

All in all, it has been a good week on the Branch, though Wanda, Barbara and Joyce started it by going to a funeral on Monday. Joyce’s brother Jimmy’s companion, Naomi, lost her sister, Jessie. She was also the sister of Charlie Carter. We send our condolences to the family. Uncle also had his 89th birthday on Saturday. Tim and Trina’s son had a birthday on the 28th. Trina is one of the Schimmoeller twins. Wanda also said she forgot to mention Butch Lawrence’s birthday on Valentine’s Day. Happy birthday to all the February celebrants.

  • A busy Saturday for folks on the Branch
  • Spring-like weather is just plain weird

Here we are in mid-February, and we haven’t had two full weeks of winter weather and that was stretched out in one or two-day increments. Basketball season is already talking about the final tournaments and golf is taking up most of the sports programs on TV throughout the weekends.

  • Birthdays, birthdays and more birthdays

This will be a short column. Nobody on the Branch did anything of note, except have birthdays. I wonder why so many people are born in late January and February?

  • A trip to Goshen, Ky. via the Branch

I have finally shaken the cold I took just before Christmas. I didn’t have a cough or pain, just sat for almost two weeks in my chair in the sun room with Dobbs and sneezed and blew my nose. My appetite has returned, along with my ability to think and form full sentences.

  • Old dogs make for fine friends on the Branch
  • Some enjoy Florida while we at home are growing ‘webbed feet’

Unless you have been vacationing in Florida since Christmas you have noticed it’s been raining a great part of the time since before Christmas. Wanda said we’ve had two and a half inches. I know it’s been more like 5 inches. Cedar Creek is full and holding back Kay’s Branch and water is filling the creek clear past Bruce’s barn. On the farm that Ray lives on in Franklin County, the ground is so wet the cows are sinking into the middle of their legs. It makes it hard to feed from the tractors.
