Young football squads continue to shine

The Owen County Parks and Recreation competitive football teams hosted the Gallatin County Wildcats and the Grant County Gold Braves recently.

All three teams came away victorious to gain a clean sweep The following is an account of the action:

Midget Division

Owen County 18

Gallatin County 0

It was a welcome return for one of the young Rebels’ best players as Blake Burke returned to action after a shoulder injury. Burke scored on runs of 50, 75, and 40 yards on his way to three first-half touchdowns to lead the Rebels to the win.

Owen County 19

Grant County 0

This game saw the return of another young Rebel as Logan Harrod returned to action for Owen County. Harrod scored in the first quarter on a 9-yard TD, added a 92-yard TD run on the last play of the first half, and scored on a 25-yard run in the second half on his way to a three-touchdown afternoon. Jason Gray also caught a conversion pass from Madison Yancey in the second half.

Mighty Pro Division

Owen County 19

Gallatin County 0

The Rebels got a 9-yard touchdown run from Patrick Osborne and conversion pass from Nolan Tackett to Austin Fitzgerald to forge to an early 7-0 lead. Fitzgerald added the next score to push the Rebels advantage to 13-0. With 20 seconds remaining in the first half, Osborne struck again with a long run to the Wildcats 1-yard line. From there Osborne scored his second TD of the day to give the Rebels a 19-0 lead.

The Rebels rushed out to a 19-0 half-time advantage and never looked back in this one. Patrick Osborne got the Rebels on the board first with a 7-yard TD run for a 6-0 advantage. Later Osborne struck again with a big 94-yard punt return for a TD. Ross Ford added the conversion for a 13-0 Owen County lead. Ty Smith put the Rebels’ final score of the half on the board with a 45-yard sweep around the right side. In the second half, QB Chandler Jones found Josh Spaulding for a long pass play deep into Braves territory. Jones added the TD and hooked up again with Spaulding for the conversion to push the Rebels’ lead to 26-0. Osborne came up big on defense on the next series with an interception. Jones hooked up with Spaulding again on a 9-yard TD pass for the final margin.

Power House Division

Owen County 19

Gallatin County 0

The Rebels defense put the first points on the board when Mason Borchers picked off a Wildcat pass and returned it 60 yards for the score. Carson Williams added the conversion for a 7-0 Rebels lead.

Williams added the next score on a 45-yard jaunt to push the Rebels advantage to 13-0. Taylor Bell pounced on a Wildcat fumble to end the first half. In the second half the Rebels final score came on a swing pass to Borchers who raced 48 yards for the score. Williams added an interception.

Grant County 6

The Rebels locked horns with the huge Braves squad and gutted out the win in this game. The Rebels struck first when Mason Borchers took a Braves’ punt and returned it 64 yards for a score. QB Tanner Smith hit Carson Williams in the end-zone on the conversion for a 7-0 Rebels’ lead. Williams came up big on defense on the next series with an interception. Late in the first half, the Braves found pay-dirt to cut the lead to 7-6 at half-time. In the second half, Williams notched the win for the Rebels with the deciding score on a 24-yard TD run.

Recreation Football

Bearcats 16

Cardinals 12

The Bearcats’ Caden Stover put his team on top first with a 60-yard score. Chase Petroff added the conversion for an 8-0 lead. The Cardinals’ Ethan Fitzgerald came back with a 40-yard score to cut the Bearcats’ lead to 8-6. Madison Yancey had a first-half fumble recovery for the Cardinals. In the second half Yancey broke free for a 60-yard TD run to push the Cardinals ahead 12-8. Petroff put the final score on the board for the Bearcats with a 60-yard TD. Solomon Teehan added the conversion for the final margin.

Eagles 8

Cowboys 0

Ross Ford had two fumble recoveries in the first half in this defensive showdown as both teams battled to a 0-0 half-time score. In the second half Ty Smith broke free for a score and Grant Smith added the conversion to give the Eagles all the points they would need. Jacob Wilson had an interception for the Cowboys.

Bengals 8

Colts 6

Carson Williams put the Bengals on the board first with a 12-yard TD run. Garrett Cobb added the conversion for an 8-0 lead. Brady Young scored a TD for the Colts to cut the Bengal lead to 8-6 going into half-time. The second half was all defense with neither team adding to the score. Tanner Smith and Kylee Hearne both had fumble recoveries.
