Who is the greatest?

Help determine which Owen County sports stars shine brightest

By Brian Blair

Muhammad Ali once boasted, “I am the greatest.”

Was he really? What makes someone the greatest?

Over the years, sports fans have had the chance to debate who is the greatest at a particular sport? For example, who is better Michael Jordan or Oscar Robertson? Who was the better baseball player, Pete Rose or Ty Cobb? Jack Nickalus or Tiger Woods?

Each comparison might spark a passionate debate among friends.

With that thought it mind, I have decided to come up with a list of my own. I think it might be fun to compile a list of the top 10 greatest athletes to come through Owen County High School. There will be a separate list for male and female.

There have been many successful athletes who have passed through the doors of OCHS. Several have gone on to play in college and have solid careers at that level. In mentioning what I would like to do, people have already given me several names. Some I had heard of and a couple I had not.

As most of you know, I am not from Owen County and have only been here for a limited amount of time. I don’t want to suggest that any of you are old, but a few of you have seen a great many more games and players than you might care to admit. Many of you have spent many hours in the old gym, the new gym and the bleachers at every one of Owen County’s home fields.

That is why I am asking for your help. I need names. I need people who you think might make the cut. What I would like for you to do is either one of two things. The first would be to stop me and let me know who you would like to nominate. I will start making a list, and of course, will be checking it twice. The second way would be to contact the News-Herald and let someone there know who you would like to see on the list, and they will pass those names on to me.

How this process is going to work is still a work in progress. I have asked and will be asking several current and former coaches for their help in putting these lists together. Their knowledge will be very valuable.

Before I go any farther, let me just say that I know someone will probably get left out. Some of you may not be happy with how things shake out in the end. That is part of the fun of doing the lists.

This project is going to be something that takes some time to put together. It is my hope to have the lists completed by the end of the school year. I will then be unveiling the names one by one throughout next summer, starting at No. 10 and culminating with No. 1.

I am looking forward to doing this and hope that it can be something that might spark some fun debate around the county for the next several months.

Thank you in advance for your input and understanding.
