Two farmers’ markets in Owen Co. get certified

Owen County is home to two of the 103 markets across the Commonwealth recently accepted into the 2013 Kentucky Farm Bureau Certified Roadside Farm Market Program. The Owen County members are  Ayres Family Orchard and Michels Family Farm.
In joining the Kentucky Farm Bureau Certified Roadside Farm Market Program, these markets have committed to offering quality products and service to their customers. Their acceptance by Farm Bureau tells customers that they meet the highest standards of quality, freshness, and marketing appeal.
Ayres Family Orchard sells a variety of apples, peaches, plums, and blackberries from June through November at the orchard nine miles south of Owenton on US 127. Michels Family Farm sells fall products including pumpkins, cushaws, decorative gourds, and various other items from September through October at the market on Hwy 1316 in Sparta.  For more information on Michels Family Farm call (859) 643-2511.
“The Certified Roadside Farm Market Program partners with our farm market members to educate consumers on the importance of locally grown products including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, fiber, and value-added products,” said Mark Haney, president of Kentucky Farm Bureau. “Along with promotional efforts designed to attract consumers, the program also partners with farm market owners to educate the public about the importance of locally grown and produced products.”
