Track team gets ready for state

The Owen County track teams took part in the Region 5A Track Meet Saturday. The meet was held at Admiral Stadium in Danville. Both teams performed well and both will be sending members to the Class A State Meet next Saturday in Louisville.

As a team, the girls finished fourth overall. Danielle Hoop qualified for next week in both the 400-meter dash and the 800-meter run. Hoop won the 400-meter dash while Rachel Dauwe finished 10th. Hoop, a sophomore, also won the 800-meter run.

In the 200-meter dash, Evyn White qualified for the state by winning the event. The 4x100-meter relay and the 4x200-meter relay teams also qualified. The 4x100-meter team finished third while the 4x200-meter team won its race. Haley DeCandia will compete next week in Louisville after she finished second in the high jump.

Other finishers at the regional meet include Dauwe, who finished fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. Melina Bress and Danielle Ransdell finished eighth and ninth in the 100-meter dash. Kelsey Johnson finished sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with DeCandia coming in eighth. The 4x400-meter relay team finished fifth.

In the field events, Miranda Goodnew placed 10th and Shayla Lainhart finished 13th in the discus. Ransdell placed eighth in the high jump. In the long jump, Johnson finished eighth. White had a strong showing in the shot put with a fifth-place finish while Lainhart placed 13th.

The boy’s team also will be represented Saturday. Josh Alford qualified by finishing second in the shot put while Keith Arutoff won the discus to earn his trip to the state meet.

Other boys who competed at the regional meet included Cory Cannon and Tyler Williams who finished 11th and 13th in the 100-meter dash.

In the 110-meter hurdles, Clayton Cook finished fourth while Dylan Hearn placed 10th. In the 1600-meter run it was Jared Fitzgerald finishing 11th while Cody Downey finished 13th.

Cannon ran to a ninth-place finish while Williams finished 11th in the 200-meter dash.

In the 300-meter hurdles it was Cook placing eighth while Avery Gover came across the finish line in 11th. Hearn finished ninth in the 400-meter dash while Justin Davis finished 14th. The 4x100-meter relay team finished third with the 4x200-meter team placing sixth. The 4x400-meter team and the 4x800-meter team placed eighth and fifth.

In the field events, Alford placed fourth in the discus. July Traylor finished fifth in the high jump. In the long jump, Tyler Pruitt finished eighth while Ryan Marston finished 18th. Arutoff finished fifth in the shot put and Pruitt placed seventh in the triple jump.
