Before buying your child or spouse a dog or cat for Christmas, please be aware that you can adopt a dog or cat from a shelter, Friends for Animals or Petsmart. They will also be spayed or neutered, wormed and up-to-date on shots. There are so many strays out there that need a home. Why purchase an animal form a breeder when there are cold, starving animals that will be destroyed or put to sleep if they can’t find a home.
Even if you want a puppy or a kitten, you can still find one and adopt one from a shelter. You may want to consider that an older pet may suit you better. They will be through the puppy and kitten stage of chewing, scratching furniture, house broken and litter-box trained. An older pet may also offer a calmer demeanor, letting children and strangers cuddle and pet them.
Not to degrade or write against breeders, but why continue to bring more animals into the world when there are so many abandoned, neglected or starving (animals). Basically, like children we all speak of, why have more if you cannot afford it. I have seen in the Frankfort paper free horses, goats and a donkey.
Please just look around before spending a lot of money on a pet, especially if money is short; and don’t forgot that continued care, food and water will be needed .
