Pair of Owen countians will compete for top honors at state competition

When the class A state track meet begins Saturday, a pair of Owen County Rebels will be there. Dillon Mears and Bobby Mingie qualified for the meet that will be held at the University of Louisville.

In order to qualify, a participant must finish first or second in the regional meet or have one of the remaining 10 best performances throughout each of the regions.

The pair qualified for the state meet based on their performances at last weekend’s region 5A meet held at Tates Creek High School.

Mears, a senior qualified in the discus with his third-place finish.

Mingie finished fifth in the 300-meter hurdles and his time was good enough to make it to Louisville.

In other events at the region 5A meet, Christina Johnson and Shelby Ogden finished 11th and 17th in the 100-meter dash.

Ogden also finished 12th in the 200-meter dash.

Michaela Gibson finished ninth in the 400-meter dash while Ashley Tyler finished 10th. Tyler also finished 12th in the 800-meter run.

Megan O’Donnell finished 12th in the 1600-meter run.

Kelsey Johnson placed eighth in the 100-meter hurdles while Kaylynn Workman placed 10th in the 300-meter hurdles. The 4x100-meter relay team finished seventh, the 4x200-meter relay team fifth, and the 4x400-meter relay team seventh.

O’Donnell and Shayla Lainhart placed 12th and 13th in the discus. The duo also finished ninth and 11th in the shot put. Haley Decandia finished fourth in the high jump while Christina Johnson placed 10th in the long jump.

For the boys, it was Cory Cannon and Chris Smith placing 12th and 13th in the 100-meter dash. Smith finished 12th in the 200-meter dash. Justin Davis and Tyler True ran to 14th- and 16th-place finishes in the 400-meter dash. Cody Downey placed 13th in the 800-meter run.

Darian Polley and Taz Adams finished sixth and 10th in the 110-meter hurdles. Polley would later finish 11th in the 300-meter hurdles.

In the relays, the 4x100-meter team finished seventh, the 4x200-meter team seventh, the 4x400-meter team fourth, and the 4x800-meter team fifth.

In field events, Daniel Cummins placed sixth in the discus. Dylan Hearn and Polley jumped to 10th- and 11th-place finishes in the long jump, while Cody Downey finished 10th in the triple jump. Adams placed 10th in the shot put.
