The last U. S. Census was taken in 2000. Since this information is compiled every 10 years, this mean it’s that time again. Your form will be mailed to you within the next few weeks.
Why is this information so important?
Your information helps determine what resources our community needs. Up-to-date, accurate information reflects changes in our community. The population size of a county, state, or region determines the apportioning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Several billion dollars each year is allocated for projects (e.g., new schools, hospitals, clinics and other service jobs). Since the census is taken every 10 years, this amount could add up to trillions of dollars, nationwide, over this 10-year time frame.
What about my privacy and confidentiality?
All information is protected; it is all private and never disclosed in any way to anyone other than the U.S. Census Bureau. It is unlawful to disclose any information (e.g., names, addresses, GPS coordinates, telephone or Social Security numbers). The principal purpose for collecting data is to produce statistics. This information can not be shared with friends, neighbors, any local, state, federal agencies – even the FBI, IRS, CIA are not privileged to this information. I might add, all Census Bureau employees take an “Oath of Nondisclosure” and are sworn for life to protect the confidentiality of information.
Please realize the benefits from submitting accurate, honest information. So many grant opportunities and other benefits are based upon this data. So when the form is mailed to you, please be prompt in filling out the information and returning it. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
