Sports Briefs: Hoop signs with University of the Cumberlands

Sept. 21 was a big night for Danille Hoop. The evening began with a win in a home meet against Walton-Verona and Trimble County. It ended with her signing a letter of intent to run track next year at the University of the Cumberlands. The signing took place in the library at Owen County High School and was attended by family and friends as well as several of her fellow competitors.

• The Owen County girls’ golf team travelled to Canewood Golf Course last week to take on Scott County. The Lady Cardinals won the match. Shelby Power had the low round of the day for Owen County with a 38. Krista Power fired a 40 while Kennedi Dermon added a 46. Aly Minch and Julie Spaulding shot a 48 and Lynsey Farrar totaled a 49 for the day. Shelby Gambrell shot a 52.

• The Owen County boys’ soccer team picked up two wins last week. The Rebels defeated Evangel Christian 6-0 in the opening round of the Frankfort High Invitational. Austin Collins scored a pair of goals while Ben Allen, Jose Munoz, Cooper Taylor and Avery Gover each had single goals. Collins also had an assist as did Jared Fitzgerald, Ryan Marston and Jordan Henderson. The next day saw Owen County drop a 4-2 decision to Gallatin County. Will Dempsey had a goal and assist while Avery Gover added a goal and Ryan Marston an assist. On Thursday the Rebels won a 3-0 contest at Henry County. The boys will be back on the field today at Walton-Verona. They will travel to Anderson County Thursday and Carroll County on Tuesday.

• The Owen County girls’ soccer team played two games last week. They lost at home to Franklin County before going to New Castle and defeating Henry County 1-0. It was the first game for the Lady Wildcats since the tragic death of teammate Miranda Goodhew. It was an emotional game for both sides since Goodhew was a former OCHS student. Christina Johnson picked up the goal for Owen County. It was the first of her career. The team will travel to Pendleton County today before hosting Carroll County on Monday night at Patterson Field.

• The Owen County volleyball team played three matches last week. They dropped the first to Trimble County in three games. They followed that up with another three game loss to Henry County. They then defeated Heritage Academy in two games. With the win they improved to 17-10 on the season. They will play at Carroll County tonight before returning home on Tuesday night for a match against Grant County.
