The Owen County High School softball team hopes this is the year they can break through.
Since 2006, the Lady Rebels have reached the 31st District championship game every season but 2011. They have yet to win. They hope to change that this year.
After losing their first four games a season ago, the team ran off five-straight wins. They would add another six-game winning streak later in the season on their way to an 18-16 record. It was their third-straight winning season and their third-straight year with at least 15 wins.
Owen County High School Head Softball Coach Jimmy Sutherland returns for his second season at the helm.
His team returns eight seniors for a squad that reached the 31st district championship game last season before falling 3-2 to Gallatin County. The team lost in the first round of the Eighth Region Tournament to Oldham County.
In order to get where they want to go, Owen County will have to navigate through the 31st District that saw two other teams amass winning records in Gallatin County and Eminence. Carroll County finished 17-17. Henry County was the lone squad that finished below .500 at 13-22. The Lady Rebels were 7-6 in 2012 against teams from the 31st district.
The Lady Wildcats of Gallatin County had the best year among 31st district competitors. They finished 22-10, won the district and reached the semifinals of the eighth region tournament. They defeated Owen County three of four times they met last season. Owen County’s lone victory over the Lady Wildcats was a 5-4 decision on April 12 in Owenton.
Eminence finished the season 13-12 despite losing three times to the Lady Rebels.
The Lady Panthers completed last season with a 17-17 record. They dropped three games against the Lady Rebels. They were able to win once against Owen County in Carrollton. The win was a 6-3 contest on March 29.
Henry County ended the season at 13-22. They were 2-0 against Owen County. The Lady Wildcats ended the season by losing in the first round of the 31st district tournament.
The rest of the schedule includes five other games against teams with winning records including Grant County, South Oldham, Collins, Franklin County and Dixie Heights.
The Lady Rebels were scheduled to begin the new season Tuesday at home against Trimble County.
The team is then slated to travel to Pendleton County on Friday. The Lady Rebels defeated the Lady Wildcats 15-0 last year in Owenton. They will then host Gallatin County on Tuesday.
