In their first two meetings this season Gallatin County outscored Owen County by a combined 15-2 score. Things would be much closer when the two squared off last week in the semifinals of the 31st District tournament.
It was the sixth time the schools had met in the tournament dating back to 2006.
Owen County won the first three meetings rather handily. Gallatin County then turned the tables defeating the Lady Rebels in the 2012 championship game and also in the 2013 semifinals. Both were one-run contests.
The scenario was not any different May 20 in New Castle. The two teams played a tight, extra-inning affair that the Lady Wildcats eventually won in the ninth inning by the final score of 3-2.
The loss ended the Lady Rebels season at 8-12 and denied them a trip to the Eighth Region tournament for the second consecutive year.
Gallatin County would defeat Henry County 6-1 in the championship game to claim its fourth-straight district title and extend its winning streak to nine straight.
