The Owen County girls’ soccer team pulled off something unusual in its opening game of the Capital City Classic last week.
The team picked up its first win of the season as they knocked off Western Hills 1-0 in a contest where they did not have a shot on goal for the entire game. The lone goal of the game came from Ashley Byers in a shootout.
The Lady Rebels had a couple of scoring opportunities but could not convert. Defensively, Owen County put in a solid effort and Samantha Toole had 26 saves in goal to preserve the win.
The win set up a match-up Wednesday night against Frankfort. Owen County Soccer Head Coach Mike Haines called it a “bitter pill” as the Lady Rebels fell 1-0.
Haines said the team played well but again was not able to capitalize.
The loss meant the Lady Rebels were to take on Franklin County Saturday night – a game they went on to lose.
The boys were in action twice last week in the 13/14 Region All “A” Classic. The Rebels lost the opener to Sayre and then dropped game two to Lexington Christian.
The boys played their home-opener Tuesday against Grant County. They will host the Owen County Invitational Saturday before traveling to Simon Kenton Tuesday night.
The girls were in action Tuesday at Anderson County. They will play host to Western Hills Thursday.
