The Owen County Lady Rebels were not in class much last week due to inclement weather. On Friday night, however, they did give Trimble County a lesson on domination.
The Lady Rebels won the opening tip and never looked back against the Lady Raiders. Hannah Neeley hit a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded on the first quarter to give Owen County a 16-2 lead. The Lady Rebels were not finished as they went on to win the game 51-33.
After connecting on just two of 13 3s against Walton-Verona on Thursday night, Owen County connected on six of 12 against Trimble County. Rianna Gayheart made four triples on her way to a game-high 18 points. The sophomore also had five assists.
Jensen Wainscott finished with 10 points and four steals. Neeley hit another 3-pointer later in the game and ended the contest with 8 points. Eko Kemper ended the night with 6 points while Samantha Toole added 4. Courtney Waldrop had 3 points while Mariah Fitzgerald had 2 points.
The win over Trimble County came just one night after Owen County traveled to Walton-Verona.
The Lady Rebels were looking for their first win over the Lady Bearcats this season after dropping two games earlier.
Walton-Verona jumped out to an 8-2 lead before Owen County stormed back to tie the game at 10-10 at the quarter’s end.
The Lady Rebels took a 16-14 lead midway through the second quarter when Gayheart scored.
The Lady Bearcats, however, reclaimed the lead and entered halftime with a 22-19 advantage.
The third quarter saw Walton-Verona extend the lead to 32-26.
In the fourth quarter, the Lady Bearcats extended the lead to 36-29 before Owen County rallied. The Lady Rebels managed to cut the lead to 39-37 when Kemper scored off an inbound pass from Emilie Davis.
Unfortunately for the Lady Rebels, it would be as close as they would get. Walton-Verona pushed the lead back to 43-37 on back-to-back baskets from Kelli Dixon.
It appeared the Lady Bearcats had the game in hand when they pushed the lead to 47-37 with less than a minute to play.
The Lady Rebels, however, made things interesting as they scored 6 quick points to cut the lead to 47-43 with 19-seconds remaining. It would not be enough as Walton-Verona eventually won the game, 49-43.
Gayheart and Kemper led Owen County with 12 points. Gayheart also had seven steals and five rebounds. Wainscott finished with 7 points while Fitzgerald added 6. Toole added 4 points and Waldrop had 2.
Weather permitting, the Lady Rebels are scheduled to play a pair of games this week.
The first was Monday night at Spencer County. They will then return home for senior night Friday night against Grant County.
