An Owen County woman is dead and a man is severely injured following an incident Saturday morning in Owenton.

According to Kentucky State Police Post 5 Public Information Officer Chip Perry, Charlotte Burke Cobb, 52, died Saturday following the shooting in Owenton. Her ex-husband, Daniel L. Cobb, 54, of Owenton, was shot once.

Police believe both shootings took place in Daniel Cobb’s basement, which also serves as the main entrance to the home.

It is believed Charlotte Cobb shot Daniel Cobb once and then turned the gun on herself.

Charlotte Cobb’s body was found by police in the basement as well.

Following the incident, Daniel Cobb was transported to New Horizons Hospital in Owenton and later airlifted to the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Owen County Sheriff Zemer Hammond said both victims were shot once, possibly with a .22 caliber weapon.

Daniel Cobb was shot once in the stomach area. State police characterized his wound as “life threatening.” As of Tuesday afternoon, Daniel Cobb was still hospitalized at the UK Medical Center.

Due to the continuing investigation, both KSP and the Owen County Sheriff’s Department declined to go into further detail.

Charlotte Cobb has served as Owenton city clerk for many years.

The news of shootings and Charlotte Cobb’s death quickly spread throughout the community.

Owenton Mayor David “Milkweed” Wotier called a special meeting of the Owenton City Council Tuesday to appoint Laura Aldridge as acting city clerk so the business of the city could continue.

But Wotier said the meeting, which involved most of the city employees, had a bigger purpose.

“We really needed to talk,” Wotier said. “All this just comes as a shock – a shock to everyone who knew her and worked with her. It’s a very somber time. None of us expected or even suspected anything like this could have happened.”

Wotier said Charlotte Cobb was a strong person and took comfort in faith.

“She was a person of high morals,” Wotier said. “She took her faith seriously and this is just a total shock for everyone who knew her. There has been a lot of tragedy in her life and sometimes it just becomes too much for people.”

Wotier said he last saw Charlotte Cobb Thursday at Owenton City Hall.

“She was taking off Friday for a doctor’s appointment,” Wotier said. “She was talking about mundane things like the W2s. I told her ‘don’t worry about a thing. Your health is more important that any of that.’”

Wotier said he had no indication something was wrong.

“One of the last things we said was about seeing each other Monday,” Wotier said. “We had no idea she was capable of taking her own life and certainly not trying to take someone else’s.”

Although Charlotte Cobb and Daniel Cobb were divorced, friends said they remained close and had gone out to dinner together in the past.

“She was a wonderful person,” Wotier said. “This is just a sad thing for all of us.”

KSP Detectives Steve Goodale and Jason Brown are investigating the case. KSP Sgt. Howard Rice and Troopers Dusty Corbin, Tim Vinal and Kurt Buhts are assisting them. Owen County Sheriff’s Office, Owenton Police Department, Owen County Life Squad and Owen County Coroner Lannis Garnett also assisted.
