Memorial Day was not a day to remember for the Owen County High baseball and softball teams.
The softball team earned a trip to the eighth region tournament after reaching the finals of the 31st district tournament for the first time since 2010.
The Lady Rebels were met in the first round last week by the Lady Colonels from Oldham County who entered the tournament with the best record in the  Eighthregion at 31-6. Oldham County would add to their win total by one as they defeated Owen County 10-0 in six innings. The Lady Colonels would eventually reach the finals where they bested the defending eighth-region champion Walton-Verona 6-2 to claim the title.
The Lady Rebels finished the season 18-16.
The baseball team was making its first appearance in the eighth region tournament since 2007. That year saw the Rebels defeat Anderson County in the opening round to reach the semifinals.
History would not repeat itself this season as Anderson County would defeat Owen County in the first round 2-1. It was the fifth one-run loss of the season for the Rebels.
North Oldham would successfully defend its regional title as they defeated South Oldham 6-3 in the championship game. The Mustangs entered the tournament with a 12-16 record before winning three straight to win the region.
The Rebels finished the season 19-13. The win total is the most for Owen County since 2007 when the team won 20 games.
