The snow and ice that fell in February will mean a longer school year for Owen County students.

Since the beginning of the school year, Owen County students have missed 11 instructional days due to inclement weather.

To make up those days, the school district calendar will be extended to June 3 for students.

Under the old plan, the last day for students was scheduled for May 20 with teachers staying in school until May 21.

With the snow days, the last day for teachers will be June 7.

Owen County School Board Superintendent Mark Cleveland said two days – March 4 and 5 – were scheduled as planning and professional development days and students would be out of school.

Because of the snow days, school will be in session both days, Cleveland said,

To make up for the lost planning day, Cleveland said teachers will now be in school June 4 and their closing day will be pushed back to June 7.

If schools are closed one more day, Cleveland said students will more than likely go to school June 5.

The Owen County Board of Education will hold a special meeting March 3 and may vote to amend the current school year calendar.
