Savored memories of Aunt Neb’s fried chicken

-A A +A
By Georgia Green Stamper

Southern families like mine hang on to stories as though they were heirlooms. Polished like fine silver, they endure, funnier with each passing year to the storytellers who witnessed the events. I never saw Aunt Neb laugh, however, when her brothers told the one about her and the fried chicken dinner. Now make no mistake. Aunt Neb probably cooked up the best fried chicken that ever was. Even when she was in her nineties and so blind she could barely see the stove, we fought for her chicken at family potlucks. And yet, her brothers never let her forget that one Sunday dinner.
