On April 8, 2012, Sara Elizabeth (Betty) Ellis Galloway passed away in Richland, Wash.
Betty was predeceased in death by her husband the Rev. Dr. Edward D. Galloway, who passed in 1970. Edward and Betty were married in 1945.
Betty was born Feb, 9, 1919, in Owen County to Ernest Ellis and Maude Roland Ellis. Maude also died on an Easter Sunday.
Betty enjoyed an almost idyllic childhood growing up in the farming community of Sweet Owen.  Her thoughts often went back to those years and the people of Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church.
Betty graduated from Cumberland College and Eastern Kentucky State College.  Later she earned her masters degrees - one in special education and one in guidance and counseling, at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, Tenn.
From the 1960s until retirement in 1984, she was a special education teacher in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
Betty served with her husband as a missionary in China and then Thailand from 1947 to 1951. Later, they both served the First Baptist Church in Russellville and the First Baptist Church in Oak Ridge.
Betty was the first Southern Baptist female deacon in the state of Tennessee. An annual award for women in leadership in Tennessee now bears her name. Throughout her life, she continued to attend writers’ workshops and loved documenting parts of her life in China, Thailand and in rural Kentucky.
Betty was also active in the AAUW, the Oak Ridge Retired Teacher’s Associates and Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary teachers’ sorority. Her great joys in life were her career, teaching adult Sunday school, music, learning, travel, family, and friends, whom she loved deeply and long.
Betty is survived by her son, Mark Galloway and his wife Maxine; her daughter, Libby Watrous and husband Bob; three grandsons, Jed Galloway and wife Lynn, Mark Watrous and his wife Dr. Jaime Bryan, and Joel Watrous; and granddaughter Avery Ellis Galloway.
