Rebels' comeback falls short

The hole was too deep and one the Rebels could not climb out of.

On Dec. 22, Owen County headed to Erlanger to take on the Lloyd Juggernauts. The teams met a season ago with Owen County coming away with the 65-53 win in Owenton. The Rebels also played in the Lloyd Memorial Invitational last December.

This year, the result was different.

The Juggernauts got off to a good start. The home team raced out to a 14-6 lead at the end of the first quarter. The trend continued in the second quarter with Lloyd controlling the tempo and finding ways to put the ball in the basket. As a result, the Juggernauts held a 34-13 lead at the half.

As the second half began, it was clear the Rebels were a different team. Owen County stepped up the defensive pressure and scored the first nine points of the half to cut the deficit to 34-22. The Rebels continued to chip away at the Lloyd lead throughout the quarter. The Juggernauts managed only one field goal in the quarter; but as the final eight minutes began, they still held on to a 42-36 lead. It was as close as the Rebels had been since the score was 4-0 early in the game.

The Rebels cut the lead to 42-41 early in the fourth quarter when Collin Gamble sank a pair of free throws. After missing two free throws on their next possession, the Juggernauts managed to get the rebound and score, stretching their lead to 44-41.

Stone Osborne scored on the next Rebel possession to again get within one at 44-43. The Rebels then had back-to-back possessions where they had shots to take the lead but could not convert. The Juggernauts then scored, to make it 46-43 with 3:00 minutes left in the game.

Drew Marston then came up with a steal and lay-up to make the score 46-45. The Juggernauts again answered with a basket to push the lead back to 48-45. This time Jordan Shelton scored to cut the lead to 48-47 with 2:00 minutes remaining. It would be the Rebels’ last points of the night.

Lloyd hit two free throws to push the lead to 50-47. On the Rebels’ next possession, Marston failed to connect on a 3-pointer and Lloyd pulled down the rebound. The shot proved to be the last opportunity the Rebels had to tie the game.

The Juggernauts made enough free throws down the stretch to pull out the 55-47 win.

Marston led the Rebels with 19 points. Gamble finished with 13 while Shelton pitched in 10. Michael Colligan had three points and Osborne had two.

Owen County did not make a 3-point basket in the entire game.

The Rebels spent Sunday through Tuesday taking part in the Coca-Cola/Campbellsville University Classic. Results were not available at press time.

The team travels to Carroll County on Saturday for a 6 p.m. tipoff with the Panthers. That game is half of a double-header with the girls. Owen County will look to begin 2009 by avenging a 54-44 loss to Carroll County earlier in December. The Rebels will then host Gallatin County next Wednesday night.

The team is hoping to have a ‘white out” in the stands and wants everyone to wear white for the Jan. 7 game.
