Next game: Playoffs at Newport Catholic, Friday at 7:30 p.m.

• Newport Central Catholic finished the season 8-2. They wrapped up the regular season with a 40-39 loss to Beechwood in double-overtime Saturday night.

• The Thoroughbreds earned the top seed in the district by going 3-0 against Holy Cross, Newport and Lloyd.

• Owen County and NCC met two years ago in the first round of the playoffs. The Rebels lost that night, 50-14. Newport Catholic would go on and lose 26-23 to Fort Campbell in the Class 2A championship game.

• The Rebels 3-7 regular season record marks the second straight year the team has finished with three wins.

• Newport Catholic is in its first season under the direction of Eddie Eviston who replaced Bob Schneider, who had been on the job for the past 44 years. Schneider retired as the winningest high school coach in Kentucky history.

• In other district action last week, DeSales (6-4) defeated Southern, 17-7. Christian Academy-Louisville (6-4) knocked off Kentucky Country Day, 40-22. Carroll County (7-3) beat Dayton, 52-20.

• Playoff pairings on Friday night involving district teams are as follows: DeSales (6-4) will host Lloyd (2-8). Christian Academy-Louisville (6-4) will host Newport (5-5). Carroll County (7-3) will travel to play Covington Holy Cross (5-5).
