Two MBMS students invited to take part in Philadelphia parade

By The Staff

The Maurice Bowling Middle School cheerleaders continue to shine.

In July, the team attended camp at University of Kentucky and came away with lots of new material and more trophies for the school. This year, some of the awards included Superior Squad, first-place Middle School Crowd Cheer; first-place Middle School Extreme Routine; and Top Spirit Squad UK UCA Camp 2010.

Three of this year’s eighth-graders were awarded top awards at camp also.

This year, UCA has started a new program called Pin It Forward. This program is to reward and honor cheerleaders who are showing leadership and demonstrating a positive image as a cheerleader in the community. Cheyene Gaines was one of 26 girls selected at the UK camp.

UCA also has a program called All-Americans, and girls from each squad can try out for this honor. Veronica Chisholm and Hannah Runion competed against over 100 girls in cheer, dance and jumps and were two of the 10 girls selected from the middle-school level as 2010 UCA All-American cheerleaders. With this honor, they have been invited to participate with other girls from around the country at the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day parade.

The cheerleaders have many upcoming events beyond cheering for the MBMS Football team Tuesday nights. Their first competition will be Sunday at the Swiss Wine Competition in Vevay, Ind.

They will host the annual cheer clinic for students K-sixth grade Sept. 13-16 for fundamental camp and Sept. 13-17 for advanced routine camp. Registration is due by Sept. 8 in order to receive a free T-shirt.
