Owen County was well represented at the New Opportunity School for Women at Berea College in February.
Christina Johns was selected as one of 10 women to participate in this three-week program.
Career exploration and leadership development create the framework for the experience, which includes an internship on campus or in the community and intensive educational and personal development classes.
For Johns, the experience was nothing short of “life changing.”
Johns said from the moment she arrived at the campus, she felt the love and support of people who believed in her and her ability to be a force in her world.
When asked what the program meant to her, Johns said, “I am so pumped. This is my time. For the first time in years I believe in me and see my future as bright.”
Johns said she was deeply moved by the experience.
“At the New Opportunity School, I met some awesome women ... people who saw my potential and encouraged me to move forward. Of course, I would never have had this opportunity had it not been for my instructors at the (Owen County) Adult Learning Center. They were the ones who encouraged me to apply.”
Johns is a student at the adult learning center and is about to complete studies for her GED.
Her plan is to continue her education with the goal of becoming a counselor.
