Owen track team competes at Walton-Verona

The Owen County track team spent last Tuesday in Verona taking part in the Walton-Verona All-Comers Meet. The team had some top notch performances from both the boys and the girls.

First-place finishes were earned by the girls’ 4x200-meter relay team and by Haley Decandia in the high jump. For the boys, Dillon Mears claimed first place in the discus.

Other solid performances by the girls included Kristiana Johnson finishing in sixth place in the 100-meter dash. In the same race, it was Shelby Ogden and Krystal Webster finishing 14th and 15th. Kaylynn Workman finished eighth in the 200-meter dash while Megan O’Donnell placed 11th. In the 400-meter dash, it was Michaela Gibson grabbing sixth place.

When it comes to running and jumping, Kelsey Johnson claimed fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles. Workman finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.

The 4x100-meter relay team finished in sixth place.

In the field events, O’Donnell placed fifth in the discus while Johnson placed seventh. Webster was 10th while Shayla Lainhart and Ashley Tyler placed 12th and 13th. Johnson brought home fifth in the long jump. Webster placed fifth in the shot put with O’Donnell eighth, Lainhart ninth and Tyler 10th.

For the boys, it was Cory Cannon finishing third in the 100-meter dash. Taz Adams claimed 11th place. Cannon would then place second in the 200-meter dash.

Three Rebels placed in the top 10 in the 400-meter dash with Will Dempsey, fifth; Justin Davis, seventh, and Tyler True, 10th. Darian Polley claimed third in the 110-meter hurdles with Adams finishing sixth. Bobby Mingie placed third in the 300-meter hurdles.

In the relays, the 4x100-meter team placed fourth; the 4x200-meter team finished fifth; and both the 4x400-meter team and the 4x800-meter team placed second.

Off the track, while Mears won the discus, Daniel Cummins claimed second place; Chris Smith, sixth; and Austin Willis, seventh.

Adams finished third in the high jump and the shot put. Also in the shot put, Cummins and Smith finished fourth and fifth while Mills, Willis and True claimed seventh, eighth and 10th.

Cody Downey jumped to a fourth-place finish in the triple jump.

The team will be in action Thursday at the Carroll County Invitational and then again Tuesday at the Grant County All-Comers.
