Owen County Sheriff Zemer Hammond is hopeful someone can identify one of the two people involved in a drive-off at Smitty’s Gas and Food Sunday.
Hammond said the incident took place around 6 p.m. when a blue Nissan pulled into the gas station, located at 6035 Hwy. 355 in Gratz.
“A man and a woman came out of the car,” Hammond said. “The woman went in and asked where the bathroom was while the man pumped gas.”
Hammond said the woman stayed in the bathroom just long enough for the man to fill the car up with gas and then snuck out.
Once the two were back in the car, Hammond said they backed the vehicle back to another driveway and drove off toward Monterey.
The pair made off with around $60 worth of gasoline.
“It’s my opinion that they’ve done this before because they backed out where no one could see the license plate,” Hammond said.
The security cameras did not show anything shoplifted from inside the store, Hammond said.
Hammond asks that anyone who can identify the woman in the photo call the Owen County Sheriff’s Office at (502) 484-3363.
