For the third year in a row, Owen County High School will host a Veterans Day lunch and assembly. The event will give students the chance to connect with and learn from Owen County veterans.
The yearly assembly began when the state passed legislation for an hour-long program commemorating veterans in the schools.
After the legislation passed, OCHS principal Shannon Treece approached teachers Kevin Webster and Greg Wilhoite about coordinating the event.
“We didn’t really know how we were going to plan the assembly,” Webster said. “We were trying to come up with ideas when we got back to class and one of my students, Mary Kennedy, volunteered to help us coordinate it.”
Webster said Kennedy, Elaina Callaghan and Lindsay Slayback have coordinated the event since its beginning.
“Mr. Wilhoite and I oversaw the three girls and helped them make sure they could fit everything into the assembly in one hour,” Webster said. “We try to be completely student-led during the assembly. The students have done everything from playing taps to reading poems for the assembly.”
Webster said students have also written letters to veterans.
“We had all of the students write a blanket letter to a veteran,” Webster said. “That year, we delivered over 600 letters to the veterans’ hospital.”
Webster said 37 veterans attended last year’s event.
“We really turned them loose last year and we had a very touching assembly,” Webster said. “It seemed like half of the people there were crying and everyone really seemed to enjoy it.”
Webster said the lunch provides an opportunity for students to talk directly with the veterans.
All veterans attending the lunch need to be at OCHS by 11:45 a.m. Nov. 11. Lunch will be served at noon. The assembly begins at 1 p.m. in the gymnasium. The event is open to the public.
Webster said veterans who wish to attend the lunch and assembly need to contact him or Wilhoite by Friday so lunch can be provided for all veterans.
Webster can be contacted by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org and Wilhoite can be contacted at email@example.com. Veterans can also call the school at (502) 484-5509 and ask for Webster.
