An Owen County man rock climbing in the Red River Gorge area died Saturday.

Menifee County Coroner Melody Smallwood told the Associated Press that Shaun Wilhoite, 28, of Owen County, fell to his death around 2:30 p.m. in the Indian Creek section of the gorge.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Smallwood, Wilhoite was accompanied by about 12 other climbers.

Smallwood said the other climbers told her Wilhoite visited the gorge about four times a year.

Although there was snow and ice in the area, Smallwood said it was unclear if the conditions may have been a factor in Wilhoite’s death.

Wilhoite worked as a lineman for Owen Electric and was a member of the Mussel Shoals Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife Taylor and son Sawyer among many other friends and family.

The funeral services will be Thursday at the McDonald and New Funeral Home in Owenton.
