Students and volunteers take part in Read Across America

Earlier this month, Owen County Elementary School celebrated Read across America Day.
Shona Gullett, guidance counselor, spearheaded a classroom door decorating contest with 100 percent participation.
Each room chose a different Dr. Seuss book as its theme. The winning room chose Fox in Socks and will get lunch in the library.  Several other classrooms got first place votes and will receive ice-cream parties in the library.
Mindy Green, OCES media specialist, invited retired teachers and other librarians to be guest readers. Each volunteer read a Dr. Seuss book.
The readers were Martha Hamilton, Beth Stewart, Ginny Banks, Jennifer Nippert, Jean Clark, Mindy Green, and Shona Gullett. The students had an opportunity to dress as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. They also read and had book talks on Dr. Seuss’ books throughout the week in preparation for the day.
Organizers of the event want to thank the parents who helped their children get in costume.
All students received book marks and “Thing One” headbands for taking part of the festivities.
