Girls Softball Preview 2011

The Owen County High School softball team has a new coach as they head into the 2011 season.
Tim Marcum and the Lady Rebels are hoping to build off a strong season in 2010.
The team is coming off a 19-win season a year ago that saw them defeat two rivals and advance to the Eighth Region Tournament for the sixth year in a row. The two big wins came over Henry County and Walton-Verona.
Owen County defeated the Lady Wildcats 2-0 in New Castle before knocking off the Lady Bearcats 11-1 in just five innings in Owenton.
Owen County began the season Monday at Walton-Verona who will again be a factor in the Eighth Region All “A” Classic. They will travel to Henry County March 29 for a contest with the Lady Wildcats.
The Lady Rebels return a solid group of players who are expected to contribute this year. Three of the top five hitters from last year’s squad return this year.
Courtney Waldrip hit .426 last season with three home runs and 36 runs batted in. The sophomore also led the team with a .967 fielding percentage. Kenzie Criswell batted .365 last year with 29 RBI. Katelyn Sutherland hit .276 a season ago while leading the team with six home runs and driving in 23 runs.
Sutherland will also anchor the pitching staff again this year. She won 10 games last year with an earned run average of 2.38 while striking out 112 hitters. Also returning this season is Miranda Owens. The left-hander totaled nine wins last year with an ERA of 2.40.
Owen County will not waste any time finding out where they stand in the 31st District. The team hosted Gallatin County Tuesday and will welcome Carroll County to Owenton Thursday.
The team will play in three tournaments this year. They will take part in the Where’s the Beach Classic in Rockcastle County over spring break. The Lady Rebels will then play in the Eighth Region All “A” Classic in April before playing in the Western Hills Tournament April 29.
