Tobacco setting is focus of new barn

As winter set in, Owen countians and those traveling through the area had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of summer labor and its history.
The third Agricultural Heritage Trail Committee tobacco barn mural was installed Dec. 30 on a barn located on U.S. 127 North. The barn is owned by Johnny and Pat Craigmyle.
The mural depicts the history of setting tobacco. Four vignettes show the progression of setting tobacco from “setting by the season” to setting on a setter pulled by tractor.

New mapping
system helps 9/11, other county agencies

As Owenton Fire Chief David Lilly and Owen County Emergency Management Director Rick Morgan trained on the county’s new 911 address mapping system on Dec. 23, they received a call of an injury crash on Monterey hill.
En route to the scene, they used the new system to get latitude and longitude coordinates to have a helicopter land at Monterey Market to transport the victim.
However, once on the scene, they used the county’s new ArcMap 9.2 geographic information system (GIS) to pin point the coordinates of the exact location of the crash and has the helicopter land there despite the low visibility and inclement weather, something rescue crews could not have done with the old system.
