Once again, the city of Monterey became a small river town brought alive by the past and present people of Owen County for the homecoming fair. The week before the fair, the town was full of volunteers, painting, mowing and trimming weeds. They really cleaned the city up beautifully.
Amanda Hammonds and Emma Thornton did a great job on the parade this year.
Coleman Wilhoite graciously stayed around town Friday and Saturday this year so the cakes could be dropped off for the cake walks. Thanks to Lee Searcy for broom sweeping the black top for the cake walks and for drawing this year’s circle. Dana, Evelyn, Lee and Laurie made us all proud for keeping up the cake walk and auctions. The women of Monterey sure know how to cook.ee
All the vendors were greatly appreciated for attending our fair when there were so many events going on in the surrounding counties.
Vanessa Wilhoite and Robin Gentry had all those kids having a blast with the games. Vanessa, Amanda and mainly Robin were also responsible for the Facebook page this year. Vanessa also always does the flyers and posters.ee
Thanks to Dara and Pat Carlisle for providing the T-shirts Friday and Saturday.
The Monterey History Museum was held at the Outpost with Teresa Fisher providing photos and such.
Thanks to Johnny Miller for delivering and donating two extra restroom facilities.
Thanks to Charles and Noel True for handling the cornhole tournaments and all the clean-up.
Thanks to Bill and Mary Leslie Atha for donating, delivering and picking up the straw for extra seating. Thanks to Randy Fitzgerald for the help on garbage removal.
Thanks to those property owners who allowed vendors to set up also. Especially those who allowed them access to electric as well.
Thanks to Tony Robertson for staying late on Friday evening to reset a swing set in the park.
Thanks to Billy Merringer and Ricky Wilhoite for their Monetary donations as well.
Colby New and friends always keep the fair tradition with having that great burgoo. Thanks, folks.
Thanks to Tracy Carter and Tony Watkins for taking over the church services this year.
Thanks to the fire department for roping the streets and allowing us to have the music at the firehouse.
Thanks to Dawn Hulette for running with meall last week, prior to the fair, getting things lined up.
The city received several donations but the silent auction had to be relocated and wasn’t as visible as planned. That was my fault for not reserving the original spot with the property owner.
What a great place to be the first weekend in October every other year. Scott Ballard, we missed you on the megaphone. Get well soon.
There are so many volunteers and I can’t remember them all.
People often ask why do we start meeting in April. Well, we can’t show up the day of the fair and expect it to be perfect. Months of preparation and many volunteers make it perfect. Even at the end, seeing all those volunteers running around in the rain cleaning, moving straw and taking down signs, all that hard work makes our Monterey Homecoming Fair a success.
