Letter to the editor: Summer reading kicks off so share a book and earn a fair ticket

-A A +A

At the Owen County Public Library, we are dreaming big.
Join us every Wednesday in the month of June for fantastic, dream-themed programming at either 10:30 a.m. or 2 p.m.
Last year over 300 Owen countians participated in our programs. We hope to beat that number this year. Programming locations will vary this summer and will include the extension building, the high school auditorium and the middle achool multi-purpose room, so check our web site or ask a librarian for more details.
It is a bittersweet realization that this will be our last summer reading program in our current facility.
To commemorate this summer’s activities, Owen County quilters have put together a beautiful “Friendship Star” quilt top that we will have on display in the library from June 12-14 in our meeting room. Children participating in this summer’s program will be invited to sign their names on one point of a star. We will then have a community quilt that will be displayed in our new library this fall.
We’re pleased that the Owen County Fair Board has again committed to sponsoring our summer reading efforts as well, by supplementing our budget for incentives.
We know that when children take the summer off from school, it’s important to encourage reading to create a bridge for their success in the next academic year. We’re teaming up with the fair board to provide a fair ticket for each participant aged six and over who reads five books during the month of June.
For children under 6, parents need to read 20 books together in order to earn a fair ticket. By registering for summer reading, you also become eligible to win a $1,000 college savings bond. See a librarian for details. Reading can make dreams come true.
If you haven’t been to the library in a while, you might be surprised at all the library has to offer. We’ve got a great collection of movies, books and music just waiting for you to check out. We even have software that you can use to learn a foreign language. If you need a WiFi connection, we’ve got you covered. If you just want to surf the Internet to look for coupons and other online deals, we have multiple computer workstations available. Our web site is packed with access to reliable, up-to-date information on a variety of topics, including health resources and job hunting guides.
Set your sights on a new horizon this summer at your public library, where everyone is a reading “star.”
