As most of Owen and Gallatin County know, on March 2, our home on 127 North was destroyed by the tornado that went through. Fortunately, considering we were upstairs in the middle of it all, Lindsay and I made it out with only minor injuries. We were so thankful to see those of you who helped us at the hospital and for the encouraging words from so many of you.
Our family also wants to take this opportunity to thank all of you who were there for us and continue to be. We would love to thank each and every one by name but know that we may leave someone out. As the saying goes, “You don’t know who your friends are until...” is such a cliché statement but one that carries a lot of weight. There were so many of you that stopped to help that we didn’t even know. It was truly overwhelming to see so many people, in such a short period of time, with such heart, show up to help take what was left of our belongings out of the house and put in storage. The donations of food, clothing, money, equipment, cards, storage trailers, dump bins, totes, personal supplies, church donation (Mt. Zion), offers of housing, phone calls, anonymous donations, care given to Lindsay while recovering, the list goes on and on, is very much more than we can express, in so many words, how much we appreciate it all.
Tom could not have done the work cleaning up without all of the donated time and equipment. The meals that were prepared and delivered were wonderful, as I sure didn’t feel like cooking for a while.
We know that we lost a lot of stuff, things we’d collected for almost 33 years, but it’s all replaceable in one way or another. The thing that can’t be replaced is our lives. Our hearts go out to those in the surrounding counties that didn’t make it. Not a day goes by that we don’t remember and give thanks. We are on the road to recovery, rebuilding and are looking forward to moving back home.
A special thanks to those of you who are keeping a roof over our heads during the interim. Also, thanks to Kelley Warnick for the very nice article in the Gallatin Co. News. We really appreciate it.
Again, thanks to each and every one of you from the bottom of our hearts. We could not have done it without you. May God bless and keep us all.
Tom, Betty, Lindsay and Drew Slayback
