Letter to the editor: Estes announces candidacy for sheriff

-A A +A

I, Greg Estes, am announcing my candidacy for sheriff. I’m a 41-year-old lifelong resident of Owen County. I’m married to Jennifer (18 years), with two children, Adam, 17 and Cagan, 13. I’m the son of Porky Estes and Judy Goodrich Estes. I’ve been employed by the City of Owenton for nearly three years and am in my third year as assistant chief of the Owen County Volunteer Fire Department and am a member of the Owen County Search and Rescue Squad.
If elected I will do the following for our community: The sheriff’s department will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. All deputies and I will be trained to be the best drug enforcement officers possible, even if this means cutting less essential areas in the budget to afford training. As you know, we have a drug problem in our community. I will join forces with the Owenton Police Department, surrounding law enforcement agencies and the Kentucky State Police to combine efforts in tackling this ever-increasing epidemic. I believe our constables can be utilized more, freeing up department time to pursue drug violations and the offenses that come along with this problem, such as theft.
Active involvement in the safety of our children in the school system will be a top priority. It will be a battle, but I strongly believe with adequate training, help from other agencies and you, we can make our community one in which we can all take great pride.
Times are changing and I strongly feel it’s time for a new and different approach.
In the coming months, I hope to meet each and every one of you in our community. I want to answer any questions you have and hear all that concerns you about Owen County. I truly believe more can be done than what is being done. I would formally like to ask for your support and vote on May 20, 2014.
Thank you for your time.

Gregory Allen Estes
