Pair of Madisons lead the way, Reed scores 1,000th point

The Lady Rebels continue to be the dominant team in the 31st District.
Owen County picked up two more wins last week over district competition as well as a victory over a visitor from the Hoosier state.
The team began last week by traveling to Warsaw to take on Gallatin County.  The Lady Wildcats are considered to be the biggest competition for Owen County in its quest for six-straight district titles.
Gallatin County may maintain its status as Owen County’ biggest district rivals but on this night, the Lady Rebels knocked off the Lady Wildcats 60-50.
A pair of Madisons led the way as Madison Gamble and Madison Reed each scored 15 points for the Lady Rebels.
Gamble also finished with seven rebounds.
Courtney Waldrop picked up a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. Hannah Neeley tossed in 11 points. Julie Spaulding added 3 points while Shelby Gambrell and Kennedi Dermon each finished with 2 points.
On Dec. 12, the team returned home for a home game with Switzerland County from Indiana. The game was never close as Owen County outpaced the Lady Pacers 70-42.
Again it was Reed who led the way for the Lady Rebels with 19 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds.
Waldrop had another big game with 14 points and six rebounds.
Neeley finished with 13 points and Gambrell tossed in 11. Spaulding had 7 points and Gamble contributed 5 points.
The win makes it two straight over Switzerland County.
Last year, Owen County knocked off the Hoosier school 56-28 in Vevay.
The Lady Rebels wrapped up the week by heading to Henry County for another district showdown with the Lady Wildcats. After leading 32-20 at the half, Owen County blew it open over the final two quarters to end up with a 59-31 win.
Reed led the way with 14 points and five rebounds.
In the fourth quarter, the junior scored the 1,000th point of her career. She came to Owen County after playing three seasons at Magoffin County.
No one was more surprised about Reed reaching the milestone than she was.
“I had no idea,” she said. “I was wondering why the game stopped.”
After making the basket to giving her 1,001 points, the action was stopped momentarily to present her with the game ball.
Gamble added 13 points in the win while Waldrop tossed in 11 points and pulled down five rebounds.
Neeley scored seven points; Dermon had 6 points; Gambrell added 4 points; and Ashton Marcum had 3 points.
The win improved Owen County 7-1 on the season.
The Lady Rebels were scheduled to take on Trimble County Tuesday night.
If Owen County wins the game against Trimble, it would be second-straight season the team had picked up eight wins before Christmas.
The Lady Rebels will not play again until after the holiday when they travel to Franklin County to play in the Staxx BBQ Capital City Showdown between Dec. 27 and 29.
