Owen County High School Head Girls Basketball Coach Bob Osborne shouldn’t have any trouble finding someone to put the ball in the basket for the next several years.
Osborne currently has Rianna Gayheart, who was Maurice Bowling Middle School’s all-time leading scorer.
He also has Hannah Neeley, who was the record-holder for most points scored in a single season.
The key word in both of those sentences is “was.”
Last year, as a seventh-grader, Kennedi Dermon broke Neeley’s record by scoring 292 points.
On Dec. 2, she did one better. Dermon passed Gayheart to become the MBMS all-time leading scorer when she scored point number 703.
“It was exciting to break Hannah’s record last year and even more exciting to break Rianna’s record this year because they are both great players,” Dermon said.
Dermon’s middle school team, coached by Beverly and Tim Marcum, has lost only two games this season.
Dermon’s mother, Dana Cobb, said the girls on the team have been playing together since they were in the second grade.
“Kennedi is fortunate to have great players around her, which has contributed greatly to her individual success,” Cobb said.
Dermon and several of her teammates are also playing on the varsity team for Coach Osborne now, as well as playing at the middle school. She scored the first points of her varsity career against Williamstown last Friday night. She finished the game with three points.
