Hunter Keeton of Owen County will compete in the Kentucky State Spelling Bee Saturday at the Frazier International History Museum in Louisville.
Keeton is one of approximately 60 Kentucky and Southern Indiana youngsters who will compete in one of the major events of the Kentucky Derby Festival.
The state winner will receive a U.S. Savings Bond valued at $10,000 upon maturity, a trophy, the latest edition of the Merriam Webster collegiate dictionary and a $25 Amazon.com gift card.
Savings bonds valued at $5,000, $3,000, $1,500 and $1,000 will be awarded to the second-, third-, fourth- and fifth-place finalists, respectively.
Official Kentucky Derby Festival Spelling Bee T-shirts will be presented to all participants, along with a commemorative certificate.
Students who have qualified for the spelling bee represent grades four through eight in public and private school systems in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.
