Before the gun sounded to begin Saturday’s Region 5A Cross County Meet, Danielle Hoop thought her biggest competition would come from Danville’s Kaitlin Snapp.

The two have battled each other for the last couple of seasons at the regional meet.

In the latest rankings, Snapp was ranked first in the Class A while Hoop was ranked second.

At Trimble County Park Saturday, Hoop beat Snapp to the finish line. The only problem was that neither one was thinking about a seventh-grader from Sayre.

Maddox Peterson, who entered the race ranked 11th in the Class A, won the race Saturday.

Peterson’s time of 20:03 was 25 seconds faster than Hoop and 38 seconds better than Snapp. Ann Eason of Sayre finished fourth while Morgan Downs from Lexington Christian finished fifth.

Owen County’s Julie Spaulding ran another good race as she finished 14th. She, like Hoop, has qualified to run in next week’s Class A State Cross County Meet at the Kentucky Horse Park.

This will be the first time the race will be run on this particular course at the Horse Park. It was just last season when Hoop and Snapp battled each other down the stretch before the then-freshman from Danville squeaked out the win.

Spaulding will be looking for another good finish after running well a season ago as an eighth-grader.
