Group to raffle quilt as Relay for Life fund-raiser

By The Staff

Owen County native Sherri Howard Godfrey has made and donated a quilt to her high school classmates’ Relay for Life team  – The Sisters Act.

Team member Kathy Stamper said Godfrey was quick to agree to the project and said she had been considering making a quilt as part of a fund-raiser.

Although she had considered doing other patterns, Godfrey ultimately decided on incorporating the cancer awareness ribbons into the final design after talking to classmate and breast-cancer survivor Pam Acton Brock.

Since she has had relatives and friends who have experienced different types of cancer, Godfrey decided to use the various colors that represent the various types of cancer.

She went to work on the project and completed the queen-size quilt within two months.

The Sisters Act Relay for Life Team will be accepting donations for this quilt.

To make a donation contact Teresa Swigert at (502) 484-2726.  The drawing for the quilt will be at the 2011 Owen County Relay for Life event, scheduled for May 27, 2011.

For a suggested donation of $1, your name will be entered one time.

Godfrey made a mini-version of the quilt, which is on display at New Horizons Medical Center next to the door of the new Cancer Resource Center, located inside the hospital at 330 Roland Ave. in Owenton.

The public is invited to stop by to see the miniature quilt and to also visit the center. Just as the quilt was designed to honor everyone who has experienced or is experiencing cancer, the American Cancer Society Cancer Resource Center is designed to increase access for everyone who wants the most up-to-date cancer-related information about cancer; to provide linkage to programs and services; and to expand the American Cancer Society outreach.

The office hours for the center are Mondays from 4 until 6 p.m. and Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until noon.

Immediate access to information is available any time at (800) ACS-2345 and www.cancer.org.
