A Gratz man died Sunday at the University of Kentucky Chandler Hospital from injuries sustained in a three-vehicle crash in Frankfort Friday evening.
S.J. Smith, 81, was driving northbound on U.S. Hwy. 127 near Frankfort’s Cove Spring Park when a southbound tractor-trailer crossed the median, striking Smith’s Chevy Malibu and a Ford F-250. The semi then careened through the guardrail and down a hill just past the entrance to Cove Spring Park, according to the Frankfort State-Journal.
The driver of the Ford F-250, Jason V. Powell, 41, of Frankfort, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the semi was transported to an area hospital and released with no major injuries, the newspaper reported.
Smith was a lifelong farmer and a member of the Gratz 7th Day Adventist Church. He is survived by his daughters, Debbie Raisor, Sharon Martin and Pam Kamunen, as well as a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. He is also survived by nine siblings.
Arrangements are set at McDonald & New Funeral Homes, with family receiving friends at the Seminary Street location from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., today (Wednesday). Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m., with Bro. Len Powell presiding. For a full obituary, please see page four.
