A group called the Kentucky For Nursing Home Reform as sent a letter to Gov. Steve Beshear asking him to raise the state sales tax from 6 percent to 7 percent and earmark that extra money for expanded programs and funding for the elderly.
Although it would be tough to find any reasons not to support the elderly and nursing home reforms, that's a pretty big hunk of cash to ask for.
The letter didn't contain any projects on how much money would be raised by the increase but there are plenty of other needs in this state that would could use the additional funding.
But overall, it's a pretty silly idea with the current backlash against taxes and the weak economy. The group would probably be better off trying to raise awareness instead of the sales tax.
