Another chapter in Owen County’s history came to a close Oct. 4 when the doors were shut for the final time at Shopko.
Though the sign above the door of the pharmacy at 119 W. Seminary St. read “Shopko,” many will always remember it as Morgan & Thomas, a trusted family pharmacy and a cool treat at the soda fountain.
Once a buggy shop in the early 1900s, the facility was later turned into a beer hall. After prohibition came to Owen County, the beer hall was shutdown and a man known as “Mr. Bennett” opened the drugstore in the early 1930s.
