Parade to be held Sunday

By Molly Haines

“Christmas: A Time for Memories” is the theme for this year’s Owen County Christmas Parade, which will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Owen County Extension Office support member, Stephanie Howard, said this year’s theme was chosen by Diana Dawson.

“Each year, we have a contest that’s sponsored by the Owen County Chamber of Commerce for the theme,” Howard said. “People submit their theme idea and we choose from them. The winner of this year’s theme has since received a $50 check from the chamber.”

Howard said the grand marshal of this year’s parade will be Miss Kentucky 2009, Mallory Ervin.

“So far we have four church floats and the Relay for Life float signed up,” Howard said. “A lot of people wait until the last minute to let us know they’ll be participating. We had eight floats last year. A lot of businesses will be walking in the parade and a lot of times our cheerleaders walk. Of course our main attraction, Santa Claus, will be there.”

Howard said the winners of the floats are split up into different categories.

“We choose civic and churches. Best civic youth and adult and best church,” Howard said. “Extension agents from other counties come out to judge the winners and the winners receive money.”

Howard said choosing the best floats can sometimes be difficult.

“I think the best floats are the ones that go along with the theme,” Howard said. “This year we’re doing Christmas memories. So for me, that would be going to Granny’s house and gathering around the Christmas tree. I think the kids make the floats.”

Howard said people continue to come out for the Christmas parade year after year out of tradition.

“It has always been a tradition for me,” Howard said. “I take my children, and I can remember going when I was a little girl and getting the candy. Then I would go sit on Santa’s lap and get an apple, a candy cane and peanuts. It’s just an Owen County tradition.”

Howard said anyone who plans to participate in the parade should contact the Owen County Extension Office at 484-5703 by Saturday.
