Zumba for the Cure
During the month of May, The Sisters Act Relay for Life team will be holding Zumba classes 6:30–7:30 p.m. Fridays at Monterey Baptist Church Fellowship Center. All proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. Try a different form of exercise and support a great cause.

Election officers’ training will be Thursday
Training for the election officers serving in the May 17 Primary Election will be held at 6 p.m. May 12 in the courthouse.
The Owen County Board of Elections will be in session all day on Election Day.

Creating a water garden is taught Thursday
Join us for the last in our series of programs on gardening and landscaping at 7 p.m. May 12 the Owen County Public Library. Our topic this month will be “Water Gardening.” Learn how to add a sense of peace and tranquility to your landscape by creating a water garden.

Deadline for MBMS nominations for SBDM council is Friday
Maurice Bowling Middle School will take nominations for a parent representative for the Site-based Decision-making Council until May 13. Please send with your child or mail your nomination to MBMS, 1690 Hwy. 22 E., Owenton, Ky., 40359, Attn: Kathy Resetar. Voting will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 27 at the school. All parents of fourth- through seventh-graders are encouraged to vote.

Screenings for Preschool and Head Start to be held Friday
Early Childhood Screenings for Preschool and Head Start  for children 3 and 4 years old begin at 8:30 a.m. May 13 at Owen County Primary School.

Kindergarten registration to be held Friday
Kindergarten registration will be held May 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Work day at local cemetery is Saturday
There will be a work day at New Columbus/Fairlview Cemetery starting at 9 a.m. Saturday.
There will be a cemetery trustees meeting at 3 p.m. June 5 inside New Columbus Baptist Church. It’s open to the public.

‘Dry’ supporters to meet Monday
“Citizens for a Dry Owen County” will have a public meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at Owenton First Baptist Church for the purpose of organizing workers to stop the spread of alcohol in our county.
Areas of service include researching, publicity, being a poll worker, finance and prayer.

Soil conservation board meets Monday

Local author signs books May 19 at library
Sherry Chandler will be signing copies of her new book, “Weaving a New Eden,” and reading excerpts from it at 6 p.m. May 19 at the Owen County Public Library. This is her first full-length poetry collection. Chandler was born and raised in rural Owen County. Come support one of our own.

Annual Arts in the Park to be held May 21
The third annual Arts in the Park will be held May 21 at the Owen County Fairgrounds.

‘A Day at the Spa’ will be May 21
Ladies, need time for some pampering? Are you feeling a little stressed? Register now for a spa experience that will make your cares melt away. Join us at 1-4 p.m. May 21 at the Owen County Public Library and treat yourself to a manicure, pedicure, or aromatherapy, and make a sugar scrub to take home. Registration is required.

‘Ride to Remember’ set for May 21
There will be a motorcycle “Ride to Remember” May 21 to honor someone who has battled cancer. The half-day ride goes through rural areas of Owen and surrounding counties. Registration is 9-10 a.m. at Monterey Market on Hwy. 127. Printed directions and planned stops will be provided for participants to catch up in case of separation or late-joiners. The last stop will be at the “Arts in the Park” event at the Owen County Park. Donations to the American Cancer Society will be collected.

Church will give free food May 27
First Christian Church will host a free-food giveaway from 10 a.m. to noon May 27 at the church. The event is open to any Owen County resident who has a need. To reserve a voucher for free food, call 484-3451 or (502) 750-3342 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. May 23-24.

GED test is free May 24, June 30
The GED test is being offered free until June 30.
There is a test scheduled in Owen County May 24 and June 15.

Free family movie ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ to be shown May 26 at library
Bring the entire gang to one of Disney’s favorite family movie adventures, “Gnomeo and Juliet,” rated PG. This free movie will be shown at 5:30 p.m. May 26 at the Owen County Public Library. All ages are welcome. Refreshments will be provided.

Ride to honor cancer survivor is May 27
A short motorcycle ride from Frankfort to the Owen County Relay for Life event on May 27 will honor Pam Brock, a breast-cancer survivor, as well as all cancer survivors. Riders are asked to gather at the Thornhill Baptist Church parking lot on Holmes Street across from the Family Dollar in Frankfort at 4:45 p.m. The ride departs at 5:15 p.m.
This ride is an annual fund-raiser. All bikers are welcome and invited to visit The Sisters Act Team campsite, which has the theme of Kentucky Derby — “The Run for the Cure.” Opening ceremony is at 7 p.m., but plan to arrive by 6:30 p.m. All survivors should arrive by 6 p.m. for the survivor reception. For more information, call Teresa at (502) 750-0953.

Relay team collecting phones, ink cartridges through May
The Dallasburg Baptist Church Relay for Life Team is collecting used phones and ink cartridges through Phoneraiser. Anyone who has a working phone not being used and undamaged or empty ink cartridges can drop them off at the following locations: Save-A-Lot, Hometown Pizza, Owen County Public Library, First Farmers Bank, and the Owen County Baptist Association during May or call Teresa Dye at 463-2539.

Hospice Grief Support Group
On June 12, Hospice of the Bluegrass will conduct a support group for those suffering the loss of a loved one.
