The soccer season kicked off Monday for the Owen County Lady Rebels.

As the season begins, Owen County Girls Head Coach Mike Haines has to replace four of his top six scorers from a season ago. Three players graduated and last year’s leading scorer, Devin Jouett who scored 12 goals, moved out of the county.

The next leading scorer was Alexis Ellis, who is returning. The sophomore scored two goals last season as a freshman. Sophomore Katie Haines scored one goal last year.

The positive news for the Lady Rebels is the return of goalie Samantha Toole. In 15 games last season, Toole had six shutouts.

The team has no seniors on the roster and returns just four starters from last year.

Haines said he feels good about the talent he has returning. Christina Johnson, Callie Towles, Kelsey Johnson and Stephanie Colligan are all juniors who are returning. Along with Ellis and Katie Haines, another sophomore who will be counted on is Rachel Herring. Kaity Smith and Ashley Byers will be getting varsity experience as freshmen.

The team gets no help from the schedule.

The season opener on Monday saw the Lady Rebels hosting preseason #7 Woodford County.

The girls will welcome Grant County to OCHS tonight.

The girls will then travel to play Sayre on Friday. The game will be played at Lexington Christian as part of the 13/14 Region All “A” Classic.
