Rain delays season opener against Harrison

By Brian Blair

The Owen County Rebels are back on the diamond ... almost.

The Rebels were scheduled to open up the 2010 season Monday night at Harrison County before returning home to host Anderson County. Rain cancelled the game against Harrison County.

Owen County finished 2009 with a 12-16 record. The team did have a 7-5 record at home.

Owen County Head Baseball Coach Kevin Webster will have to replace six seniors from last year’s squad.

This season, the Rebels will be led by seniors Brody Layton, Corey Towles, Byron Robertson and Kyle Kelly as well as sophomore Stone Osborne. A pair of freshmen, Collin Trammel and Zach Ripy, will also be looked to provide help both in the field and at the plate.

The Rebels will once again play a tough schedule. The openers this week came against last season’s 8th region champ Anderson County.  Owen County will also host Shelby County who lost to Anderson County in the region finals last season.

The team will play in several tournaments throughout the season. They will take part in the Lead-Off Classic this weekend at Woodford County. In April, they will play in the Kohl’s Tomahawk Classic at Madison Central and the Woodford County Invitational. They will also take part in the 8th Region All “A” Classic and the NCKC Tournament.

Last year, Owen County went 2-4 against district foes Carroll County, Gallatin County and Henry County.

The Rebels will be at home Thursday when they host Trimble County at 5:30 p.m.
