Third Owen County team boasts undefeated district run

The football team did it.
The Lady Rebels basketball team did it too.
On Thursday night in Eminence, the Runnin’ Rebels also achieved perfection in district play.
Owen County High School defeated the Warriors 69-44 to finish the season unbeaten in 31st district action.
When one includes wins over Gallatin County and Carroll County in the Eighth Region All ‘A’ Classic, the Rebels went 10-0 against district competition. It is the first time the team has finished the season unbeaten in the 31st district.
The Rebels began the week by taking on one of the top teams in the eighth region when they hosted North Oldham.
The two teams met earlier this season in the championship game of the Capital City Classic in Frankfort. On that night with Sawyer Williams hobbling, North Oldham was able to take advantage and win 56-46.
On Feb. 7, a healthy Williams scored 10 of the Rebels first 11 points as it was clear the senior wanted to prove a point.
Owen County led the game 25-20 at halftime and continued the solid play into the third quarter.
Taking a 35-29 lead into the fourth quarter, Jarrod Ball connected on seven of eight free throws over the final eight minutes to propel the Rebels to the convincing 52-39 victory.
Williams finished the night with 18 points and five rebounds. Ball added 11 points while Zach Ripy tossed in 10. Stone Osborne scored 9 points while Cooper Taylor and Justin Shelton each had 2.
They finished the week by playing a pair of road games. The first came at Eminence where Owen County cruised to the 69-44 victory. Williams and Ball again led the way as each scored 16 points.
Saturday, Owen County traveled to Crestwood to take on the Dragons of South Oldham.
Things began well enough with the Rebels running out to a 30-20 halftime lead. The visitors were playing well while the home team was struggling to make shots. The Dragons finished the first half 0-10 from 3-point range.
Things began to change in the third quarter as South Oldham started to chip away at the Rebel’s advantage. Heading into the fourth quarter, Owen County had seen their lead trimmed to 47-41. The lead would not last long as South Oldham quickly took control of the contest.
In just one minute, the Rebels saw a 5-point lead turn into a 9-point deficit as the Dragons found their stroke from the outside and the Rebels began to crack under the pressure of South Oldham’s defensive pressure.
When the final buzzer sounded, the Rebels had suffered a 71-59 defeat. The loss dropped Owen County to 19-9 on the season.
Despite the loss, Sawyer Williams had another big night as the senior finished with 23 points. Ripy finished the night with 13 points. Carson Williams added 9 points while Osborne tossed in 8. Ball, Shelton and Taylor each had 2 points.
The Rebels went in search of win number 20 Tuesday night when they closed out the home portion of the regular season by hosting Walton-Verona.
The Rebels will close out the regular season Thursday night when they travel to take on Oldham County. The Colonels boast the best record in the eighth region with a record of 23-5. They will enter Thursday’s game riding a 10-game winning streak.
