Alford joins News-Herald as summer intern

The News-Herald would like to welcome Owen County High School graduate and Morehead State University student Mary Alford to our staff as a summer intern.
She is a second-generation journalist. Her father is Associated Press Reporter Roger Alford, who covers Frankfort and the General Assembly for the wire service.
“We are excited to bring Mary aboard,” News-Herald Editor John Whitlock said. “She will bring a new voice to the newspaper and we are all happy to have her.”
The following is some of Mary’s thoughts about joining the News-Herald, journalism and some of her experiences in the field.

“It’s a tool of the trade.”

I heard this phrase repeatedly growing up from my father, who is greatly responsible for my pursuit of journalism.
Granted journalism is not a field I always pictured myself in, maybe medicine or law, but it’s something I have really come to enjoy.
While I have been a convergent media major at Morehead State University, I have had the opportunity to meet several fantastic people including some individuals in the field such as Laura Glasscock and John Flavell.
Flavell is the faculty advisor for Morehead’s campus paper, the Trail Blazer, and a great photojournalist. I have been a part of the paper for the past two semesters and he has really tried to help me in my choice.
This last semester I applied for the managing editor position and plan on beginning my role in the role next semester.
Last summer, I was able to intern under Glasscock at the Kentucky Gazette, the oldest paper in the state. She was a great influence and introduced me to a great deal of people in Frankfort.
I am excited to intern here at the News Herald in the small town where I have spent most of my life.
I believe this paper will provide a great experience for me and give me the opportunity to meet more amazing individuals in the field and out.
